Pastor Daniel ThuesonThe Foolishness of Faith Happy New Year! I hope you experienced a wonderful Christmas with a season full of hope, love, joy, and peace. I have heard numerous responses to our Advent Christmas worship series and how many of you are adjusting your life to experience more Christmas, more Christ, and less chaos in your every day living. As we go forward, let’s remember that these adjustments are not about creating new or bigger burdens for ourselves. Rather, it’s the act of letting go of the craziness we tend to surround ourselves with, being present in the moment, and sharing our experiences of Christ that transcends the way our culture puts its consumeristic spin on everything. Speaking of cultural spins, there is a rise in atheism or agnosticism. These forms of belief are making a comeback in what is known as an un-Christian movement. It’s not anti-Christian, rather it’s a rise in people who are giving up their faith or no longer practicing the faith. A few years ago, author David Kinnaman worked with the Barna Group and published a book by the name, “UnChristian.” It detailed how the church has an image problem as insincere, insensitive, judgmental, and not willing to deal with real cultural issues in an intelligent way. Yet, there was a way for Christians and the church to make a positive impact on society. This is us. We as a church will continue making a positive impact on society. We will walk with you when you are downtrodden, lift you up when you’ve fallen, and disciple you so that in your walk with Jesus you can bring someone else along. Essentially, we will continue to live into our mission statement of: Making life better and YOU better at life through Jesus Christ. We are not church who majors in callous judgmentalism and minors on the grace of God. We’re not a church that avoids the issues plaguing our community. We are a church that lives by faith, emphasizes grace, and walks the hard and narrow road of following Christ by loving God and loving neighbor. In 1 Corinthians 1:18-24, Paul said that faith was foolish to some and scandalous to others. The message of a crucified savior who rose from the dead is still foolish, scandalous, even crazy to many. God chose this message and here we are. If we can embrace the outrageousness of a crucified savior who offers grace and good news of great joy for all people, then we can also offer grace to a world that has doubts about our message. For example, one of the challenges our culture faces is doubt. Somewhere along the line people were told that doubt was wrong, doubt was bad, doubt was against Christ. Yet, the reality is that most people struggle with doubts – even Christians! We need to learn to be honest about our doubts, face them, and wrestle with them. In the end, we will grow stronger in our faith through this process. Then, we need to allow others to have their doubts. Moreover, our honest transparency will allow those who do have questions and doubts find a place to ask their hard questions without fear of insensitive judgment. As we love them in the midst of their doubt, we will open doors for people to experience Jesus, find faith, be washed in grace, and receive a renewed life in God. It’s not easy. In fact, it’s easier to point out the faults and weaknesses of others than to go through our own process of refinement and growth. Yet, we can do this. Once again, we will rise to the occasion. Afterall, the church is not a museum or country club for saints. Instead, the church is a hospital for sinners, hypocrites, and broken people who are willing to wrestle with their doubts, fears, and hard questions about life, faith, and God. I am proud to be your pastor and look forward to this journey with you. Our new series starting January 8th is called Wrestling with Doubt, Finding Faith. We will deal with the most common questions that people struggle with, major questions of doubt in an intelligent and faithful way. I encourage you to invite your friends and neighbors to worship with us. Grace and Peace, Pastor Daniel For more infomation visit:

A Heartfelt Thank You!
A special thank you to all of you who attended one of the presentations of The Seven Noels. It is the hope of all choir members that you were blessed by it and perhaps it made your Christmas Season a little more meaningful! And an extra special thank you to all those involved in the presentation. Your hard work and loyalty were such a blessing to me personally. The narration written by Rita Billbe made it much more meaningful for sure. In addition, the choir donated over $700.00 dollars to our Wesley Kitchen in our honor. Shirley and I are so thankful for the generosity of the choir, and appreciate this gift to one of our food ministries. Blessings, Terre Ware |

Farewell to Marilyn Kobialka
December 19th was the last day for Marilyn Kobialka as part of our staff at here FUMC Mountain Home. She has been a valuable member of our ministry since 2007 and we are thankful for her time and service with us. Marilyn has taken a role that allows her more time to care for her family and take care of her own health. During her tenure, Marilyn began her time here in the kitchen preparing meals for special events. She was instrumental in kitchen management, preparing meals for Wednesday Night Live, launching the Homeless Ministry, Angel Food Pantry, Feeding Peter Ministry, and Shower Ministry. Furthermore, it was Marilyn who initiated the Shower and Laundry Trailer mission project. Later she joined our custodial staff and specialized in detailed cleaning. We are grateful for Marilyn’s many years of service and wish her the best in her new endeavor. May God’s grace abound in and through us all.

Wesley KitchenResumes Thursday, January 5 We would like to offer a huge thank you to Sarah Jones for her leadership of this ministry the last 7 years. Due to health issues with her family, Sarah made the difficult descision to step down from this leadership position. Under Sarah's leadership, this ministry has grown immensely including the addition of an important shower ministry. Sarah, her husband Russ and the Wesley kitchen team even found a way to continue this important ministry through the pandemic years by providing drive-thru take out meals. During her time in leadership, Sarah applied for and received several grants providing both food and equipment for the ministry. This church is so very grateful for your service. Thank you for helping Wesley Kitchen to thrive! We would like to introduce you to our new Wesley Kitchen leader, Kris Grover. Kris has been a part of the Wesley Kitchen team since last spring and has graciously agreed to take the helm beginning January 1st and we are so excited to have her! |

Can Tabs For Hackler
Do you sometimes wonder if it’s worth the trouble to save can tabs for the Hackler Intermediate School’s student needs? We have been able to donate at least six gallon bags each year thanks to your generosity. It takes 200 pounds of tabs for the school to receive $80.00 cash. Students are in grades three, four, and five. You might be surprised to know all the good Hackler does for the children with needs. With parental permission, school personnel are able to laundry clothes, give the children food, showers, toothbrushes, haircuts, and school supplies. Sometimes a child who never gets to eat in a restaurant is taken (with parental permission) to one of the local places like McDonald's. When children are hungry or dirty and these basic needs aren’t met, it can be hard for them to learn. This is why the can tabs are so appreciated. Many thanks to all of you who have donated can tabs. If you would like to collect more tabs for the students’ needs, please bring your tabs from vegetables, soda pop, and pet food cans, etc., to the First United Methodist Church office. Thank You!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank You!
Kellye Cannon and I had the pleasure of delivering all of the Baby Jesus Shower items and the Warming Tree items to the Informed Choices Center. And when I say pleasure, that is truly what I mean. They were overjoyed to recieve so many items for their clients! They asked us to make sure to thank all of you from the bottom of their hearts. They said it was like Christmas for them! The pride for our church family and the rewarding feeling that Kellye and I had when we left there is something I can hardly express in words. As we left, Kellye said "I wish everyone could have come with us so they could all get this same feeling!" If you are not familiar with Informed Choices and the incredible work they do, we encourage you to stop by there and take a tour. In fact, the folks working there told us to invite you all to do just that. They are located on 3rd street. Thank you again for your generousity. What an amazing church family we have! God Bless! Did You Know?Did You Know About The Homeless Initiative Task Force? Our church has a passion for mission work and helping the least, last, and lost. One area of heavy focus is homeless ministry. From Hope 4 All homeless ministry to Wesley Kitchen to Angel Food Pantry and even our shower ministry, we do a lot. Yet, did you know that Pastor Daniel Thueson is on the Community Homeless Initiative Task Force? This is a special group that brings the Mayor, Baxter Regional Medical Center (Baxter Health), Food Bank of North Central Arkansas, community leaders, and several other local agencies together to create a community plan for responding to homelessness in Mountain Home and the twin lakes area. As we work on a masterplan for our community’s response, we have made an initial effort to provide increased shelter space. Together, funds have been raised to open the Reach Center, located at 1326 Rossi Rd in Mountain Home as a semi-permanent shelter. Anyone needing a place to stay for the night may stay at the shelter from 6:00 PM to 7:00 AM every night through March. Guests must check in and hand over any medications or weapons for safe keeping until they leave the next morning. We currently do not have accommodations for pets. During their stay, guests will receive dinner, breakfast, and shower time. First United Methodist Church is an integral part of this ministry. If you would like to volunteer to stay an evening or provide a meal, please contact Pastor Daniel or Carolyn Densmore at the church office 870-425-6036. |

605 Student Ministries
Happy New Year to you all! As we ring in the new year, often we are asked the question "What is your resolution?" Usually our response is that we want to change ourselves somehow and oftentimes the means of change we use is that of change through subtraction of something. We may want to quit something such as drinking, smoking, or overeating. Maybe we want to stop eating dessert after every meal or snacking on chocolate. All of these things are great and if God is convicting you to do one of them by all means do it. I know that in today's society we often find ourselves so over burdened that getting rid of things and simplifying seems to make the most sense. However, sometimes adding things to your life can be a good thing. Such as adding quiet time for prayer to your life each day. Adding a morning devotional so you can put on the armor of God each day is hugely beneficial. Getting that leather bound Bible off the bookshelf, dusting it off and reading it daily could be huge for us in so many ways. I know for me the coming of a new year symbolizes the coming of a new beginning for myself. I want to take this time to reflect on how last year turned out based on decisions I made, the way I prioritized things and if that was God’s will for me. Then realign myself with any place I may be falling short. As for me and my house, we shall serve the Lord and always remember that not only is Jesus our savior but he is Lord over all. I pray that each and everyone of you all grow closer to Him in 2023 as well! Youth Events: Tom Merry For more infomation visit:

Youth SpotlightMeet Liam Alexander Liam is a 9th grader in the Mountain Home District. His family moved here his 8th grade year from Oregon. He is a multi talented young man. He played football, now wrestles, and is a lifelong baseball player. However, Liam also has sung with our Chancel Choir, throws knives, and enjoys reenactments of olden times. He has great taste in music and an ability to speak with convincing accents. Another talent he has that not everyone knows about is his ability to chop wood. (There is a reason some have nicknamed him “the lumberjack”) Liam is a fine young man and has a huge future ahead of him! Be sure to say Hi when you see him! |
