BeLieve
We kicked off 2024 with our Be Campaign. Drawing on Micah 6:8, and asking ourselves the ever-present questions of: What does God want? What is the best way to worship God? How do live into the reality of who is God? And, how did the first disciples and early church do this? Jesus ministry reflects back to God’s kind response, through the prophet, to the people as do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with God. We’ve taken this to heart at FUMC. In a world that is divided by divisive political rhetoric, we are offering something different. We’re offering people a way to Be. As humans Be-ings, we are helping one another to Be just, Be kind, and Be humble. We’re setting the example to Be generous with our time, talents, and financial gifts. Then, during Lent, we focused on what it means to Be love. That God is love and God’s love confounds the world. Those who don’t know God see God’s message and act of love on the cross as foolish. Yet, it is the power of God to those of us being saved. We explored different ways God’s love is unconditional, unfair, breaks the rules, is dangerous, forgives, heals, overcomes, and offers hope. When we follow Jesus, we often do things that seem scary, uncomfortable, or outside of what’s normal because the world often doesn’t understand God’s mercy, grace, and love. The early church found unique ways of Be-ing this. While the inspiration for their work wasn’t new or different, it was a new way to practice their faith. Due to their revelation of who Jesus was and is, they were able to live out the fullness of what Jesus was teaching, the fullness of the law and prophets, the fullness of what it means to be just, be kind, be humble, be generous, and be love. Essentially, there were able to Be-lieve. The were able to believe the truth of God, have faith in Jesus, and grow as disciples. I believe we all want to do the same. We want to believe in God, believe our faith in Jesus makes a difference, believe and follow in a way that changes hearts and lives, and believe in a way that makes the world a better place. The early church called this, “The Way.” I invite you to walk in The Way with me as we learn what it means to Believe in God, what the early church believed about God, what all Christians believe about God, and how our faith, how we believe, can lead us to make a real, positive, and meaningful difference in this world. Thursday Morning JoyWomen's Fellowship & Study Group We have just started a new study: “Walking With God in the Desert” – a 7 week DVD study by Ray Vanderlaan and part of his “That the World May Know” series. These DVD’s take us onsite into the Sinai peninsula to study the struggles God’s people faced after the Exodus during the 40 years they ‘wandered’ in the wilderness before entering the promised land. These are always popular studies with the class and there is No homework and No study guide required for this study. This study will conclude May 9th. Thursday Morning Joy meets Thursday mornings at 9:30 AM in the Seeker’s Classroom, #213. New members are always welcome - just come, listen and try us out. It’s a great way to spend a Thursday morning! |
New Church Directory Time!
It's that time folks! We are finally planning a new church directory! The value of an up-to-date church photo directory is undeniable, now more than ever. A church directory helps people put names to faces. Remembering who everyone is — and who “belongs” with whom — can be challenging. Seniors might know most of the other seniors, and youth might know most of their peers, but it’s unlikely that all members can identify one another. A directory also helps new members and staff can get up to speed quickly. A compilation of faces, names and contact information is especially useful for people who are new to the congregation, whether in the pews or in leadership. Learning lots of names is much easier when a current photo directory is handy. A church directory also encourages relationships. Achieving a family-like feel and building community are important goals for First United Methodoist Church. But personal connections can’t happen if people are strangers! A photo directory provides a sense of belonging and indicates that members are part of a special group. Please take a minute and fill out this online form (one profile per family member). We want to make sure the contact information we include in the directory is up to date. Once we have collected everyone's info we will start scheduling photo appointments!
