Standing Up For Christ

There’s a saying that if you don’t stand up for something, you’ll fall for anything. When I think of standing up for Jesus, I’m reminded of the hymn, “Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus.” It’s opening stanza is:

Stand up, stand up for Jesus, ye soldiers of the cross;
lift high his royal banner, it must not suffer loss.
From victory unto victory his army shall he lead,
till every foe is vanquished, and Christ is Lord indeed.

It’s an arousing anthem with a militaristic tone. It conveys God’s might, power, and victory. It encourages us to rely on God’s strength rather than our own and not to wane in the power of the gospel.

When I reflect on the gospel stories and the work of Jesus, that’s exactly what Jesus did. He gathered his strength from the Holy Spirit by spending time in prayer with God. As a result, he could continue to do the work of his Heavenly Father no matter where he was or who he was with.

A lot of his work involved traveling, preaching, and ministering to the least, last, and lost as well as to the diseased, disabled, and demented. He welcomed, loved on, and eagerly ministered to every single person. He even spent time with them in their homes where he offered his unconditional love to individuals and their friends. He encouraged them to worship with him.

Other parts of his work involved teaching people the truth about God. He spent almost equal time with the religious political elites such as Pharisees, Sadducees, Essenes, and religious lawyers. He dined with them in their homes. Taught with them in the market, teaching steps, and temple. He worshipped with them in the synagogues and temple.

Yet, when it came time to stand-up for what was right, to stand up for God, who did he have to stand up to?

Two groups stick out. First were the people apathetic to him. “Woe to you Chorazin and Capernaum!” (Matthew 11:21). They neither rejected nor accepted Jesus. His message had little effect on them. How sad!

Ironically, the second group were the religious elite. Specifically, it was those who were supposed to be sharing God, teaching about God, and helping others get closer to God. Except, these hyper-legalistic groups made life harder for the people. They created impossible standards and expectations. They limited people’s access to worship. They ignored pleas for mercy and grace. Ultimately, they prevented people from coming closer to God and even hindered their prayer.

In fact, Jesus became so frustrated with the religious self-righteous, that one day he chased them out of the temple. “He said to them, “It’s written, ‘My house will be called a house of prayer.’” (Matthew 21:13) To be clear, this wasn’t about selling things at the temple, it was about the process of entry into the temple and the ability to participate in worship. Every time I read this passage in all four gospels, I wonder how many people are we keeping out of the church?

Jesus stood up to those who denied what God was doing through him. Jesus stood up to the religious legalistic snobs. He stood up to the hypocrites who thought they were better than the “sinners.” He told them, “learn what it means to learn that God desires mercy over sacrifice.” (Matthew 9:13, 12:7, and Hosea 6:6) He stood up to the people who were making it harder for people to come to God, to those keeping people away from God, those who were not allowing people into worship or were preventing people from participating in the community of faith. When he cleared out the temple, he opened it up to those who had been kept out.

What did Jesus stand up for? Jesus stood up for us all. He stood up all the way to the cross.  He was branded a vile criminal, a blasphemer, cursed to hang on a tree, for you, for me. He hung there so that we might have a better life through him.

While we were yet sinners, all of us, Christ died for us. We all have sin. You have sin. I have sin. Should we spend time talking and wallowing about each other’s sin? Or should we confess, repent, and move on? For those who want to focus on the sins of others, ironically, I’ve yet to meet anyone that really wanted me to make their own personal sin public.

Instead, let’s focus on the main thing, the work of Christ by the grace of God. Let’s be busy living in the love we have received and have been commanded to share. This doesn’t mean we condone the wrongs of others. This doesn’t mean go out and sin more. This means we do our part by loving people where they are and letting God do God’s part in God’s time.

This is not burying our head in the sand or waiting to see what happens. This is focusing on the mission at hand. The real mission of picking up our cross and following Jesus. As people who stand up for Jesus – as soldiers of the cross – we’re not going to allow ourselves to get sidelined by hurts, hang-ups, and bad habits. We’re not going to allow ourselves to fixate on hyper-legalism.

Finally, we’re all in this together. No one says Jesus is Lord unless it’s by the Holy Spirit. (1 Corinthians 12:3) The same Holy Spirit is working through all of us to continue the work of God. Still, it’s not for everyone. Some will choose not to be a part of what God is doing in us and through us. It will hurt. Yet, we must respect that. We will love them regardless.

When I first became a Methodist, I was taught to err on the side of grace. Grace was a hard thing for me to learn. Yet, I learned it by experiencing it. I learned it through others showing me grace.

Therefore, I want to share that grace. The grace and love I have known is life changing. So, when it’s time to stand up for Jesus, I invite you to stand with me. Let’s stand-up for Jesus through grace, mercy, love for one another and for the other.

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Daniel

Welcome to the team!

We are so pleased to welcome Tom Merry to our ministry team here at First United Methodist Church Mountain Home!  We are excited that he, along with his wife and kids, will be joining our church family!

Tom and his wife, Sara, moved to Mountain Home Arkansas a year ago with their sons Isaiah, Noah, and Solomon. They previously lived in South Bend, Indiana. Tom served as youth director with two different churches in Northern Indiana. He loves to meet students where they are and help them to experience Christ's love for them.

Before his move to Arkansas Tom worked for Notre Dame where he ran concessions for the sporting events. This combined his love for food and sports. Outside of serving youth, his favorite thing to do now is watching his sons participate in sports, acting, and follow their passions. His favorite Bible verse is Phillipians 4:13 "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."

Tom will begin his journey with us officially on September 19th but you will likely see him around before that. Tom will be working closely with Justin Long, our interim as well as the rest of the staff to ensure a smooth transition and continue our mission of making life better for our students and families at First United Methodist Church Mountain Home.

The Art of Hospitality

The Art of Hospitality

Sermon Series

Engaging worship and intentional follow-up processes are important, but what compels guests to return to our church is the warmth of our welcome and hospitality that goes beyond their expectations. The Art of Hospitality sermon series will help to guide our church in the artform of creating radical hospitality that infiltrates the heart and culture of the entire church.

Radical hospitality is at the heart of the gospel message. It goes beyond being friendly. It is intentional hospitality that surprises and delights people by making them feel noticed, giving them personal attention, and providing excellent follow through. It is hospitality that makes them feel so welcome they want to return again and again.

When we do hospitality with excellence, we create an opening for the Holy Spirit to work. We open the doorway to life change.
To make guests welcome, we may have to adapt our behaviors – go out of our comfort zone – to make them feel comfortable.

The Art of Hospitality series begins this Sunday, September 4th.

Back to Church Sunday

Back to Church Sunday

September 18th

We are so excited to join in this endevor! This year, the theme for National Back to Church Sunday is "Hope Happens Here".  Now, more than ever, people need Jesus and a caring community where they can belong, grow and flourish. This September 18th, we want you to be a part of introducing this community to our church family and to Jesus by inviting them to church, so that they can experience His hope as well as reconnect with others! If you haven’t been joining us for worship in-person, online on television or radio, we encourage you to use this opportunity to get back to church. And even if you have been attending regularly, we encourage you to invite someone who might not know Jesus the way you do.

It’s time to love again, serve again, and HOPE again. Who will our church reach this fall?

“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD,‘plans to prosper you, and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future'” – Jeremiah 29:11

Feeding hungry children

This ministry provides weekend meals to over 250 Mountain Home school children each week. Volunteers pack and deliver food every week during the school year. Our first pack this school year will be Wednesday, September 7, 2022

A huge thank you to all the volunteers who helped at Bomberfest! We collected 36 bins of food and $794.00. Our 605 Students were great at sorting and shelving. We would also like to thank all our long-time supporters and The Mountain Home Elks Club, who generously donated $2500. If you are interested in 2nd mile giving (over and above your church tithe) this is a great ministry that helps the children in our community.  You can make checks payable to Backpack Food 4 Kids and drop them in the collection plate on Sundays or use the convenience of online giving with the button below.  Be sure to choose "dedicated funds" and then put "backpack" in the memo/notes.

You can also support us by coming out to ARktoberfest on the square on September 17th.  You can find more information on the ARktoberfest Mountain Home facebook page. 100% of proceeds will go to our program.  If you are interested in helping with the pretzel necklaces for ARktoberfest, contact one of the numbers below.

Collections October 1 – Oct 30

This is the 45th year of Ingathering in the Arkansas Conference.  That's 45 years of United Methodists feeding the hungry and supporting disaster relief.   If you are unfamiliar with ingathering, this is when we put together and collect things like food, disaster kits and monetary donations to help those in need.  More details will be coming soon but here is a little info on our Northeast District (NED).

This year, we are having a month-long collection event leading up to our statewide Ingathering Service Event in Little Rock at the Arkansas Food Bank on Saturday, November 12.  During October, churches are encouraged to “one-up” themselves by collecting more disaster kits and food than last year.

Our goal for the district is:
• 2500 items for Disaster Supply Kits.
• 25,000 pounds of food

Our goal for our church is:
• 250 items for Disaster Supply Kits or 150 kits
• 2500 pounds of food for our Angel Food Pantry

Details on the items in the disaster relief kits and more info will come soon.
