Free IndeedAn Independence Day Devotion As our Youth Director, Michelle was choosing songs for the July 4th Crossroads service, I was reminded of this devotion. Some of you may recognize it as I am recycling it from a previous year. With July comes Independence Day. For most of us this means a long weekend, picnics with friends & family, burgers and hotdogs sizzling on grills and fireworks bursting in the sky. We eat, listen to patriotic music, watch fireworks, and celebrate the tremendous freedom we enjoy. We are a blessed nation for sure. On that first Independence Day in 1776, it was all about gaining liberty from the tyranny of King George III. He had set up our colonies with multiple restrictions on our rights and governance, so our founders decided to break free. Friends, we live in a nation that allows more freedom than any other, and as Christ followers, we are the freest people on earth because we have another kind of freedom to celebrate. We are free from the bondage of our sin and death. This Independence Day it would be good for us to remember (and celebrate) our spiritual journey to freedom, as well as our America’s freedom. The Bible describes it this way: "For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son, who purchased our freedom and forgave our sins” (Colossians 1:13-14). Much like the American Revolution for independence, Jesus Christ came to our rescue and set us free from our oppressor. He pledged His life, and paid the ultimate price for our release from captivity! I Corinthians 15:1-4 gives a concise picture of the freedoms we have in Christ: FIRST: “Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures.” He died for one reason: to pay the penalty necessary for our sins. He took our place. Because of His death, we are made free from the death penalty of sin and stand righteous before God. This is our justification. SECOND: “that He was buried.” Romans 6 tells us that through faith we died with Him and were buried with Him and are now dead to the power of sin over us. Sin no longer has dominion over us, so we can choose to live righteous, holy lives. We are free from sin’s control over us! This is our sanctification. THIRD: “that He rose again the third day according to the scriptures.” His death alone could not save us; it was the resurrection that showed God’s acceptance of Christ’s sacrifice, and that gives power unto salvation. In Colossians 3:1 we read that we are risen with Christ. His resurrection guarantees a future in Heaven for us, where we will be free from the presence of sin. This is our glorification. Sometimes we tend to forget what it would be like to live under the tyranny of our sin. We take our freedom for granted, and therein lies the grave danger of forgetting this life-altering promise from God’s Word: It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. ~ Galatians 5:1 Now that’s cause for celebration—every day! As we celebrate "Independence" this fourth of July, let us remember that the greatness of America is knowing that our liberty comes from Him who died for us, and that our "freedoms" spring from the love of God. Let’s not waste this incredible opportunity to pledge our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor for something even bigger than the founding of a new nation. Jesus Christ has granted us independence so we could be free to serve Him and serve the cause of making disciples to further the Kingdom. If you really want to celebrate this 4th of July, let the long weekend remind you of the spiritual rest we have in Jesus. Let the picnics remind you of how our Savior meets every hunger and thirst. Let the fireworks celebrate the freedom you have been given through faith in Christ, and let relationship with Him be the flag that flies over the castle of your heart every day of the year! God Bless you all Laura Law Check out this song: Free Indeed (Timothy Reddick) |

Saturday August 14th is "Back to School at the Pool"! Join us at the City Pool from 5:00pm to 7:00pm for a private Pool Party! We will provide food and drinks! Join us for this "last blast" before school begins. It will be filled with food, fun and fellowship! Everyone is Invited! One last thing: in a few days we will be celebrating America's freedom. As americans, we love a reason to celebrate! Is there any other national holiday that is quite as exciting as the 4th of July? Close your eyes and think about the many Independence Days you have celebrated. What comes to mind? Backyard BBQs, sunshine, lemonade, games, parades, swimming, and of course fireworks. What a great celebration we look forward to on July 4th! This year I challenge you to take a moment to talk to your children about why we celebrate our Independence and what philosophies our Founding Fathers used as they set out to create this nation. Did you know that of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence, 24 of them held seminary degrees? Yep, that's right! Their belief in God and their Christian faith became the foundation of this nation, as well as the way in which our government was formed. This July 4th, as you look up, ooohing and ahhing at the grandeur of the fireworks displayed in the night sky, remember that this nation was built on the Word of God. Then, take a moment and remember to give God praise and thanks for our free country and for our freedom from sin and death granted to us by our Savior, Jesus Christ. Blessing of the BackpacksSunday, August 15th As the summer winds down, we begin thinking of school bells ringing, chalkboards being cleaned, pencils being sharpened to a perfect point and all the other things that come with the start of the school year. With the last school year came many challenges for teachers, students and parents but we made it through. And that is in part because of God's answers to the many prayers for strength and guidance through this unpreceidented time. Our educators worked tirelessly to find creative solutions to challenges they faced in keeping our children's education. We owe them a great deal of thanks. This year we would like to bless not only the backpacks of the students, but also the students themselves and the educators. Sunday, August 14th we will be doing the blessing of the backpacks at each service. All students are encouraged to bring their backpacks to worship that day to be blessed. Each student will recieve a backpack tag to place on their backpack as a reminder of God’s presence with them at school and the prayers of their church family too. We will pray oover the students and educators an ask God to equip them with all they need for a wonderful 2021/22 school year. |
